The Prologue explains that a physisists tumbled across a story where Fermi said, “Where are they?” In reference to the aliens. The idea is that the galaxy is a huge place and if people believe that extra-terrestrial beings exists then, where are they? There have been billions of years where these beings could have become a more advanced civilization then we they could have sent signals or something. This question of Where are they? Became known as the Fermi paradox. Many people believed that no one else exists and we are alone. The narrator says that the thought of being completely alone on this planet made him really sad because he always believed that there was something else out there. To further dive into this that means that there is no one smarter than us and what we are is it. That narrator wonders whether the response to this should be sadness or not? The person he is interviewing says that if you really think about it, it can make anyone sad. He uses the example that he has been looking at videos with his son Augie and they watched the moon landing together. They explained how empty the moon was, no life just dust.
The connecting factor in all the acts is loneliness. The first act and the prologue focuses on the loneliness of the world if there are no other living things then what is on earth. In act one the physicists elaborate and poses the question would you feel less lonely if it wasn’t an intelligent species but instead just some random plant species on another plant. The second act focuses on the loneliness the women who got cheated on felt. The act emphasizes the idea that marriage can be such a lonely thing if it goes bad, which her relationship did. In order to get past her state of loneliness, she needs her husband to recognize the fact that he caused her pain and stop feeling bad for himself. The therapist says that many days she feels like there is no hope for humanity and other days she feels like she can help them with the loneliness, it solely depends on the couple and the day. Act 3 focuses on the loneliness that Rosie feels. She just started at a new school, has no friends, and feels neglected (attention-wise) by her father. Therefore, she goes out of her way to write basically unanswerable questions for her father so he will pay more attention to her. Also, this act can be connected to act one by the idea of questions that we may never find out the answers to. All of the questions that Rosie asks all have the same theme of requiring deep thought. For example, what is life why? Where do we go when we die?, and what is love? are all questions that we may never get answers to because there might not be an answer. This question is similar to the questions talked about in act one like “What happens when we die? why is the speed of light so slow? and is there other intelligent life on the planet? To go back to the loneliness theme, even the songs played in between acts related to loneliness.
Some questions I would write down if I had the chance for my parents to answer are:
How do you know when you are in love?
What does it feel like to die?
How did the first person alive come to be?
What is the point of life?
I feel like most of these questions answers are all based off of ideas, theories, or opinions. No one can actually answer them, especially not my parents, because there are no definitive answers to them.
I don’t necessarily feel scared that there is no other life beyond Earth. Honestly, I agree with the first scientist that spoke in Act 1 when she said, that it is probably for the best that we haven’t found other life, because we don’t know what they would be capable of. However, I do agree with David that knowing if there is anything else out there is super interesting.
My favorite question that Rosie asks is why is there time and what is it? I honestly think about this all the time how everything has a time limit, due date and expiration date. We are all out here living based off of time, but eventually we will all die and there will be no time left so why time?
